How Often Should Trees be Watered in Calgary?

Updated: Apr 5

Trees Watering in Calgary

Calgary has some of the world’s most interesting and dynamic weather patterns, and consistent precipitation isn’t something we can rely on when it comes to watering our trees, gardens, lawns, and other plants in our yards. So how often should you water your trees in Calgary?

It’s not a one-size-fits-all scenario, and it really depends on the trees you have. Newly planted trees, for example, have totally different needs from large, multi-story trees that have been growing for decades. The species of tree, whether coniferous (ever-greens) or deciduous (leafy), also plays a part in the tree’s ability to retain moisture in different seasons.

Let’s explore specific tree categories.

1. New Tree Watering

Tree Watering

Newly planted trees should be watered once per day for one to two minutes with a light, spray-nozzle attachment. You should spray from about three feet from the trunk, and water around the circumference of the tree. So retain more water around the tree, we recommend a two foot circle of mulch around the base of the tree, which will encourage growth and minimize water lost to evaporation. If water begins to pool around the base of the tree, the soil has been saturated. Cease watering, and reduce the amount of water for the next watering.

2. Coniferous Tree Watering (Evergreens)

Coniferous Tree Watering

Coniferous trees require water twice a week through the spring, summer, and fall months.

Tree care

Water should be administered around the drip line of the tree (where the lower branches end),

and moved around the tree in intervals of two to three feet. Water for thirty minutes to give these trees plenty of water and keep them healthy. Watering your coniferous trees prevents against branches breaking during storms, which can damage property or cause injury. Coniferous trees are subject to moisture loss, as well as withstanding Calgary’s dynamic weather, so it is crucial to their health that they receive proper care.

3. Deciduous Tree Watering (Leafy)

Tree Watering

Deciduous trees should be watered once weekly from the middle of May in Calgary through the third week of October, in the same manner as coniferous trees as described above.
